After the departure of Consadole Sapporo’s first-choice goalkeeper, ‘Gu Sung-yun,’ as he joins FC Daegu FC to more conveniently serve his home country’s compulsory military service, the spot between the posts at the club became vacant.
At the moment, there are three men competing for the main goalkeeper position on the team. The first contestant is 36 years old veteran goalkeeper, Takanori Sugeno, who has been with the club since early 2018. However, Sugeno has only played a total of 18 cup matches and one league game during his 2-year spell at the club. The second contestant is 25 years old, Shunta Awaka, who has mostly been on loan since receiving the promotion from Consadole Sapporo youth academy to the first-team in 2013. As for Awaka, he has only appeared once for the club in a 2016 league game when Consadole Sapporo was still in the second division.
The third and final contestant is the Thai national team goalkeeper and only foreign candidate, Kawin Thamsatchanan. Recently, arriving on loan from Oud-Heverlee Leuven of the Proximus League, Kawin seemed to be the obvious and perfect replacement for Gu Sung-yun. Nevertheless, due to the high competitiveness and pressure at OH Leuven as well as on the national team, Kawin hasn’t seen a lot of actions on the pitch in 2019. Henceforth, only time will tell which players will grasp this vacant spot for the last line of defense at Consadole Sapporo!
